Keysi Fighting Method New York

Frequently Asked Questions

 What exactly is KFM?

Keysi Fighting Method (KFM) is an art form dedicated towards the study and investigation of survival in the modern day urban environment.

 Where does KFM come from?

KFM was born on the streets of Spanish Gypsy origins in 1950's Spain by Justo Dieguez (the founder), who along with Andy Norman (the cofounder) developed & evolved it and bought it to the United States in 2007.

What does Keysi mean?

Keysi was the nickname given to Justo Diegues (the founder) when he was a boy. It means "from the heart".

What is the difference between KFM and Ring Sport Martial Arts such as Boxing, Muay Thai and MMA?

The goal of a ring sport martial art is to compete in competitions and win medals or trophies within specified rules. The goal of KFM is survival and your life. There are no referres, no rules and usually weapons and multiple opponents in real self defense situations, so the tactics and training methods are much different then in ring sport arts.  Although ring sports will develop great fighting attributes that will crossover to some areas of your self defense skills, they are not tactically designed for the complexities of real life self defense situations. They are two different animals with two different objectives.

What is the KFM school uniform?

There are no uniforms on the street so there are no uniforms in our classes. Our goal is for our students to be comfortable in defending themselves in any place, at any time, in any clothing.  So our students train in a variety of clothing/footwear, both inside the academy and outside on the concrete as well as in all types of weather.  Violence is unpredictable and can happen at any time or place so our training methods address these variables and realities. Your'e only as good as your training!!!

What is your ranking structure, do you wear belts?

We do not wear belts in KFM but we do have a ranking structure.  Our ranking structure is broken up into what we call Grades. The Grades of advancement are: White, Yellow, Orange, Geen, Blue, Brown, Black (Black has 10 levels). Although rank is nice to chart your progress, we stress to our students to not get so caught up in it. Your realistic fighting skills are what's really important.  A belt or certificate will never save your ass on the street, that's something that's up to you!!   Note: We do not charge for rank or advancement. Rank is paid for with hard work, commitment and skill. Not money.

What is the protocol between the Students and the Instructors?

Students and Instructors show mutual respect to each other but there is no worshipping of the Instructors in our Academy like you see in many other Martial Arts schools. Ego stroking and delusions of grandeur are left at the door. Students and Instructors show mutual respect to each other at the beginning and at the end of each class. Students call the Instructors by their first names not Master, Sensei etc. So if your looking for a cult like worshipping of the Instructors you're in the wrong place. We are Americans living in America, so we do not follow any Asian customs of bowing or worshiping. We also don't believe in fostering that type of subservient mindset. We foster an Agressive Predator mindset where everyone is their own individual and Master. So although we respect everyone, we don't believe in bowing to anyone nor do we ask anyone to bow to us. We are concerned with teaching you self defense and self perfection but not any other foreign cultures formalities or customs.

Can I train in KFM if I'm out of shape or overweight?

Students come to us with various fitness levels. Obviousely if you are overweight and out of shape you will have a tougher time then those who come to us well conditioned.  Either way we will get you where you need to be.

How old do you have to be to train in KFM, do you have children classes?

Students must be at least 18 years old. Do to the responsibility that comes with learning our material we do not teach minors or children. We believe the old saying "With great power comes great responsibility".

What are the average ages of the students in your KFM classes?

Student ages range from 18 years old to 65 years old.  It is our opinion that every Adult needs personal protection skills. Our training can be adapted to anyone's fitness level and attributes.

Do I have to sign a contract to join?

There are no Contracts here.  We don't need them! KFM is unique, extremely effective, and addictive. Once students train our Art they are hooked. We don't need contracts to keep our students. Students pay monthly tuition as they go and we accept cash or credit cards.

Where have I seen KFM before?

KFM has been featured in the movies: Mission Impossible 3, Batman Begins and Batman The Dark Knight with more movies on the way. Hollywood has fell in love with KFM for it's devastating and unique approach.
