It's very simple, if 3 guys break into your house at 3:00am in the morning and your answer to the situation is to try to fight them with Boxing, Kickboxing, Grappling or anything with your bare hands then you are definetly "NOT" studying a Reality Based Martial Art. What you are studying is most likely a Sport Based Martial Art or a Traditional Martial Art which will probably get you killed if used under these realistic circumstances !!
REAL SELF DEFENSE starts with weapons and works it way down the ladder to Bare hand techniques.
Open the newspaper any day of the week and you will read about someone who was shot to death or stabbed to death. In comparison "RARELY" will you ever hear of someone who was beaten to death by one person with their bare hands. In the REAL world, violence happens against multiple opponents and opponents with weapons. Not in a ring but on the street, in a car or in your home. If your Martial Arts training is not addressing these common & realistic situations then they are "NOT" preparing you for REAL world violence.
By no means are we knocking Sport Systems or Mixed Martial Arts, they are great in what they specialize in, which is a "SPORT ENVIRONMENT with REFEREE'S, RULES, ONE OPPONENT & NO WEAPONS". Under these circumstances these Arts are the best "Bar None". But when it comes to 1- Multiple Opponents 2-Criminals with Weapons or 3- Realistic Environments (not a ring), they fall apart because their training is not focused on it nor is it tactically designed for it.
If you are currently studying a Martial Art for self defense and you are curious if the one you are studying is in fact a Reality Based Martial Art, then just ask yourself the following 3 questions to find out:
1- Does my Martial Art train me to deal with multiple opponents from Day One (not in 5 years)?
2- Does my Martial Art train me with "modern day" weapons and "improvised" weapons (not impractical or antiquated weapons that cannot be legally carried at all times)?
3- Does my Martial ART train me in real time & in various environments that I would find myself in real self defense situations (not just in a padded gym but in real everyday environments)?
If your Martial Art is not addresing the above and you are looking for a Reality Based Martial Art, then KFM is for you.
Remember "Real" Personal Protection is not a sport or a game. It's "your life and/or your loved one's lives". The loser gets seriousely hurt, raped or killed. They don't lose a trophy or a tornament.
This is the main difference between Sports/Traditional Martial Arts and Reality Based Arts. So please, whether you decide to study KFM or not, know the difference and seek out proper instruction.
Don't make the mistake of showing up to a Gun fight with a Boxing Glove. Get some serious training from an Art that specializes in REALISTIC PERSONAL PROTECTION!!
Note: KFM prefers the term Personal Protection as opposed to Self Defense. Self Defense implies that you are on the defensive. The truth is, in the real world you will never survive a violent encounter by using defense. Violent encounters are survived by overwhelming your attacker with Offense or Counter Offense not Defense. Thus when describing what we do we prefer the term Personal Protection as opposed to Self Defense.
